Cutting down and removing small trees from your property.

Small Tree Felling

Small tree felling is the process of cutting down and removing small trees from a private, public, or corporate residence. You might need to have a small tree felled, if it's encroaching on natural light entering your property, the roots are damaging your property, or if the tree has rotted.

What is Small Tree Felling?

Small tree felling is the process of cutting down and removing small trees from a private, public, or corporate residence.

You might need to have a small tree felled, if it's encroaching on natural light entering your property, the roots are damaging your property, or if the tree has rotted.

What is classed as a small tree?

  • A small tree can be any species (though some species may be subject to a Tree Preservation Order and require additional permission)
  • Must be under 25 feet tall
  • Must be less than 780mm in diameter

Can I fell a tree in my rental property?

If you are the tenant of the property, no. If you own a rental property, you don't need permission to fell a tree in your own property unless it's subject to a Tree Preservation Order, or in a Conservation Area.

Can I fell a tree that sits on a property boundary?

If the tree trunk is on your land, but the branches overhang into your neighbour's property, they have a right to cut the overhanging branches, but the branches remain your property.

If you cut a tree down and the process damages your neighbour's property, for example the tree unexpectedly falls onto their shed or car, you will be liable for the damages.

Do you offer small tree limbing?

Unfortunately, we're not able to offer small tree limbing currently.

Potential penalties and fines

It's important to make sure that you're allowed to fell the trees on your property before proceeding. Without permission, it’s an offence to cut down, uproot or wilfully destroy any trees:

  • subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)
  • in a Conservation Area
  • over 5 cubic metres in volume (whether an individual tree or several smaller trees).

Those who damage or carry out work without permission on a tree with a TPO or in a Conservation Area may be:

  • fined up to £20,000
  • prosecuted for felling without a licence
  • served a notice to replace any protected trees that have been destroyed.
